In Russia free speech costs $33

A Moscow court recently ruled that journalist Aleksandr Podrabinek pay 1000 rubles (about $33) to a World War II veteran for a phrase he used in an article online. The phrase:
"Your homeland is not Russia but the Soviet Union. Your country, thank God, has not existed for already 18 years."
Somehow this constituted defamation. Article here.
